HIV Prevention (Project SMART)
The Council of Community Clinics received funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (ProgramAnnouncement (PA) 04019: CapacityBuilding Assistance to Improve the Delivery andEffectiveness of Human Immunodeficiency Virus(HIV) Prevention Services for Racial/Ethnic MinorityPopulations) for Project SMART (Social Marketing as a Resource Tool) for a five-year period from April 2004 to March 2009, with a subsequent six-month extension through September 2009.
The Project SMART Historical Profile outlines the development and implementation of Project SMART (Social Marketing as a Resource Tool), a project of the Council of Community Clinics. The focus of Project SMART was to provide training and technical assistance on social marketing to health departments and community based organizations that provide HIV prevention and support services. The intent of this training and assistance was to build each organization’s capacity to develop and implement future social marketing campaigns in their respective communities. This report contains valuable lessons learned, recommendations for future program implementation, sample program materials, and case studies of social marketing campaigns carried out with technical assistance from Project SMART. The document is designed to provide other organizations with the information they need to create similar programs in their own communities.
